What You Get in the GMAT Official Starter Kit

The free GMAT Official Starter Kit: 70+ official questions and Practice Exams 1 & 2. How to access it, what the mocks tell you and how to plan your next steps.

The GMAT Official Starter Kit is GMAC’s free starting point for preparing for the current GMAT. It includes a bank of 70+ official practice questions and two full-length adaptive practice exams. You can use it to learn the question formats, establish a baseline score and identify what needs work before buying additional materials.

Its biggest advantage is access to official exam practice. Its limitation is scope: a small question bank and two mock exams are not a complete preparation course. Here is what you get, how to access it and how to use the materials without wasting your first diagnostic.

What comes in the free kit?

The package includes the GMAT Official Starter Kit + Practice Exams 1 & 2. It is a digital preparation resource, not a printed book or a voucher for the actual exam. The current official listing describes 70+ practice questions, two adaptive exams, custom practice sets and performance analytics.

Component What you get Best use
Official practice questions A 70+ question bank covering Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights Learn formats and identify initial weaknesses
Practice Exams 1 & 2 Two full-length, adaptive official mock exams Establish a baseline and assess later progress
Practice review Answers and explanations for the practice-question bank, not the full-length exams Understand mistakes and compare solution approaches
Exam results Total and section scores, with performance-review information Identify priorities for your study plan

GMAC distinguishes question-bank explanations from practice-exam review in its support documentation.

The standalone practice questions are separate from the questions you encounter during the mock exams. Treat these as two different activities: question-bank practice is for learning, while a full-length exam is for measuring performance under realistic constraints.

Which GMAT Official Starter Kit matches today’s exam?

Older articles and screenshots may describe a different package because the GMAT itself changed. The current exam has three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. Its total score scale runs from 205 to 805; you can see how section scores add up with our GMAT score calculator.

You may still see the current format called the GMAT Focus Edition, although the exam is now branded simply as the GMAT. Materials mentioning Sentence Correction, an Analytical Writing Assessment or a separate Integrated Reasoning section refer to the retired format.

Before activating anything saved in an older account, check that its description matches the current three-section exam. Our comparison of the current GMAT and the retired Classic GMAT explains the differences if you are sorting through older study resources.

What the two official practice exams simulate

The GMAT Official Starter Kit includes two computer-adaptive exams designed to reflect the current test’s structure and scoring. GMAC confirms in its official practice-exam documentation that these exams use the same scoring algorithm as the actual exam, making them particularly useful for establishing a realistic baseline.

The current exam contains:

  • Quantitative Reasoning: 21 questions in 45 minutes.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 23 questions in 45 minutes.
  • Data Insights: 20 questions in 45 minutes.

That is 64 questions over 2 hours and 15 minutes of testing, plus an optional 10-minute break. You can confirm the format through the official GMAT exam overview, and our guide to the GMAT exam pattern and question format describes every question type.

Use the mocks to rehearse more than answering questions. Practice your section order, break placement and use of the question review and edit tools. Follow the actual calculator rules rather than using a calculator whenever a calculation becomes inconvenient.

For a meaningful result, complete the exam in one sitting with no notes, outside help or extra breaks. Pausing to research an unfamiliar concept turns the session into study practice rather than a diagnostic.

What your practice score can tell you

A mock score is evidence about your performance that day, not a guaranteed test-day outcome. Use it to investigate your knowledge, pacing decisions and familiarity with the interface rather than treating the number as a prediction.

Your first GMAT Official Starter Kit score is most useful when you connect it to specific behaviors. A weak Quant score could reflect missing algebra knowledge, excessive time spent on a few problems or errors caused by rushing. Those problems require different responses.

Review total and section scores first, then examine the available performance-review information. Record what caused each meaningful error rather than simply counting incorrect answers.

Retaking an exam can help you rehearse timing, but familiarity reduces its value as an independent score estimate. GMAC warns that repeated questions become increasingly likely after the first two attempts, so a higher retake score does not necessarily represent equivalent improvement on unfamiliar material.

Practice questions, explanations and custom sets

The standalone question bank lets you work in smaller sets rather than committing to a full mock exam. Use section-based practice and the available question-type and difficulty filters to focus your work, then review the explanations before moving on.

Early in preparation, untimed sets can help you learn how official questions are constructed. Later, timed sets reveal whether you can apply those methods quickly enough. Keep the purpose of each session clear: learning a new approach and testing your speed are different tasks.

The GMAT Official Starter Kit is particularly useful for comparing your reasoning with an official explanation. After a mistake, identify the missing concept or decision, then solve the question again without looking at the answer.

Practice-bank explanations and mock-exam review are not identical. GMAC’s practice-question documentation describes detailed explanations in Study Mode and after completed Exam Mode sessions. Its practice-exam documentation states that full-length GMAT Official Practice Exams do not include answer explanations. An answer key tells you which option is correct; a worked explanation helps you understand why your approach failed.

How to access the kit and check your setup

Start with the official product page linked above. Sign in or create an mba.com account, then follow the access instructions shown for the product. You do not need to purchase a paid preparation bundle to obtain the free kit.

Before beginning a mock, open the platform’s current technical requirements. Browser support, mobile access and account-navigation details can change, so use the instructions attached to your activated resource rather than an old walkthrough. The official product listing also includes a technical-requirements section.

A desktop or laptop is the practical choice for full-length simulation. Do not assume that being able to sign in on a phone means the entire exam experience is supported or suitable on that device.

Check that questions load correctly, pop-ups are not being blocked and your connection is stable. Close messaging apps and notifications before starting the timer. Also check the review and retake controls in your account before beginning.

Turn the kit into a practical study plan

The most useful sequence is a little familiarization, one diagnostic exam, targeted study and then a second exam. Taking both mocks back-to-back usually tells you less than spacing them around meaningful preparation.

Learn the interface before measuring your baseline

Try a small selection of questions from each section first. Understand the instructions, answer formats and navigation so that your diagnostic is not dominated by avoidable interface confusion.

You do not need to master every topic before taking the first mock. The purpose is to discover where your preparation should begin, not to produce a score you already feel comfortable sharing.

Translate mistakes into specific study tasks

After your first exam, use the GMAT Official Starter Kit results to choose a few concrete priorities. “Improve Data Insights” is too broad. “Set up ratios accurately in Data Sufficiency questions” gives you something you can practice and evaluate.

A useful error log separates concept gaps, reasoning errors, misreads and pacing problems. For section-specific methods, see our guides to Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. For each recurring issue, write down the corrective action and schedule a later retry.

For example, if you repeatedly rush the final questions in a section, your next task may be learning when to abandon an unproductive approach. Completing more untimed questions alone will not address that problem.

Save the second exam for a progress check

Take Practice Exam 2 after you have worked on the weaknesses revealed by the first. Keep conditions similar so the comparison is meaningful.

Look beyond the total score. Better pacing, fewer preventable errors and improved performance in a weak section can indicate progress even when the overall score moves less than expected. Our step-by-step GMAT preparation guide explains how to build these review cycles into a broader schedule.

What to add when you outgrow the starter materials

The GMAT Official Starter Kit provides a useful diagnostic foundation, but its limited question bank is not a substitute for sustained practice or instruction.

Choose your next resource according to the gap you have identified. The GMAT Official Guide and official question banks provide additional practice material. Further official practice exams provide additional opportunities to assess readiness on unfamiliar tests. Check that any product you buy supports the current exam format.

If explanations assume knowledge you do not yet have, prioritize instruction before purchasing more mock exams. If you understand the concepts but struggle to apply them consistently, targeted sets and systematic mistake review may be more useful.

Be careful with bundles: check which exams or questions you already own before paying for overlapping materials. More resources do not automatically produce a better study plan, especially if they leave little time for reviewing mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

Are Practice Exams 1 & 2 free?

Yes. They are included in the free official starter package. Paid official exams and preparation bundles are separate products, and the free kit does not cover registration for the actual GMAT.

Is the GMAT Official Starter Kit enough to prepare?

It can be enough to learn the format and establish a baseline. Whether it is sufficient beyond that depends on your starting skills and target score. Candidates with substantial knowledge or pacing gaps will usually need more instruction and fresh practice.

How closely do the mocks match the real GMAT?

They reproduce the current exam’s structure and use the same scoring algorithm. They are valuable readiness checks, but no practice score guarantees an identical result on test day.

Can I use the kit on my phone?

Check the current device and browser requirements within the official platform. Mobile account access is not the same as full practice-exam support. Use a supported desktop or laptop setup for realistic full-length practice.

Can I retake an official practice exam?

Yes. GMAC’s current rules allow multiple attempts at the free Practice Exams 1 & 2, but they cannot be reset mid-use. Consult the official practice-exam documentation linked above for retake and reset details, including the effect of repeated questions on score validity.
