Every question on the section is Problem Solving — but the problems themselves fall into three recognizable shapes. Learn to spot which one you're looking at, and the solve gets faster.

Type 1 · Pure calculation
Straight arithmetic and algebra
No story, no setup — just an expression, equation, or inequality to simplify or solve. These reward speed and clean technique above all else.

Type 2 · Word problems
Algebra hidden inside a story
Rate, work, mixture, and age problems dress up ordinary equations in real-world language. The real skill here is translation — turning sentences into math fast.

Type 3 · Data-heavy reasoning
Statistics, sets, and probability

Can I use a calculator in the GMAT Quantitative Reasoning section?

No. A calculator is not available during the GMAT Quantitative Reasoning section, and personal calculators or calculator-enabled devices are not permitted.

You should prepare to perform calculations using mental math, written work, estimation, simplification, and logical elimination. An on-screen calculator is available only in the Data Insights section.

How much time should I spend on each GMAT Quantitative Reasoning question?

With 21 questions in 45 minutes, you have approximately 2 minutes and 9 seconds per question on average.

You do not need to spend exactly the same amount of time on every problem. Some questions may take less than a minute, while more complex word problems may require additional time. Effective pacing means avoiding excessive time on any single question and preserving enough time to complete the entire section.

Is Data Sufficiency part of GMAT Quantitative Reasoning?

No. Data Sufficiency is currently part of the Data Insights section. The Quantitative Reasoning section contains only Problem Solving questions.

This distinction is important when choosing GMAT Quant practice questions or building a study plan, as older preparation materials may reflect a previous version of the exam.

How is the GMAT Quantitative Reasoning section scored?
